Job Description

The Head of Engineering (AI First) for Digital Channels is a senior delivery leadership role accountable for the engineering health, system design integrity, delivery governance of the domain responsible for all investor-facing and client-facing digital channels and Skylight platform. This is an AI-first role: the default assumption for any new or updated capability, workflow, or process is that AI executes or builds it, with humans in the loop where judgement, accountability, or relationship requires it.

The role is not accountable for the global technology strategy — that sits with the Global CTO — but responsible for contributing. The role is fully accountable for translating that strategy into a governed, high-quality, AI-native delivery operation across the Digital Channels domain. In an AI-first engineering organisation, the primary engineering artefact is no longer code written by humans — it is the specification, the prompt, the agent workflow, the policy, and the oversight architecture that governs AI execution either in production systems or in product development. In some cases, the Head of Engineering must design systems whose behaviour cannot be fully predicted in advance, govern their output in a regulated financial services context, and develop an engineering team whose primary skill is directing, evaluating, and improving AI systems rather than writing software from scratch.

However within the context of the domain, the Head of Engineering owns technology decisions as long as they do not have long term impact to the firm and do not impact other domains.

You Will:

  • Own the end-to-end delivery integrity of the Digital Channels domain — what ships, when it ships, and at what quality level. Exercise unconditional no-go authority when a release — human-built or AI-generated — is not safe to ship, regardless of product pressure.
  • Own the AI system design integrity of the domain: maintain the agent registry, ensure every AI workflow has correctly placed HITL controls, and design and operate the evaluation framework that monitors AI system performance in production.
  • Govern specification quality as the primary upstream quality gate. Claude Code (or another tool as the company might add to its toolkit from time to time) is the universal development environment; the precision and completeness of the specifications that direct it determine the quality of what gets built. Own that standard across all domain squads.
  • Lead the joint specification and output validation model with the Head of Solutions, Digital Channels — not a handoff model but a co-ownership model from discovery through to production, with shared accountability for domain outcomes.
  • Manage and develop every engineer in the domain: hiring, onboarding, performance, career development, and the transition to an AI-first operating model. Actively manage engineers who are struggling with the model shift.
  • Maintain domain compliance with the security posture, data classification standards, AI governance policies, and engineering golden path. Ensure no shadow AI, no unapproved model endpoints, and no production data flowing to unsanctioned services.
  • Own the on-call rotation, incident response protocol, and post-mortem discipline for the domain — distinguishing between software incidents and AI system incidents, with specific containment and communication protocols for each.
  • Manage cross-domain dependencies, platform Engineering consumption, and the interface with the Data Engineering and AI Platform functions.
  • Contribute actively to the engineering leadership weekly forum and chair one quarter per year — making decisions in the forum rather than deferring them, holding peers to cross-domain commitments, and upstreaming domain-specific AI patterns to the shared prompt library and golden path.
  • Provide an honest, timely, and accurate signal to the Global CTO and Head of Solutions on domain health — delivery trajectory, engineering quality, AI system performance, team health, and risks. No surprises, no sanitisation.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Advanced degree is not required but relevant professional development in AI system design, software architecture, or engineering leadership is valued.
  • Demonstrable continued learning in AI-first development practices, agentic system design, and evaluation methodology is expected given the pace of change in this domain.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in senior engineering leadership roles managing squads and owning delivery outcomes.
  • Experience in a regulated financial services environment is essential — the candidate must understand what it means to ship safely when errors carry regulatory, client, and reputational consequences.
  • Critically, the candidate must have demonstrable hands-on experience designing, deploying, and governing AI-executed workflows or agent systems in a production context — not AI-assisted development, but AI as the primary execution mechanism for business processes.
  • Experience leading an engineering team through a significant operating model change is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in alternative asset servicing, fund administration, or adjacent financial services is advantageous given the domain-specific data presentation and disclosure requirements of the investor-facing surface.
